The Celestial Cleft of Nallamala Hills

Ugra Stambham

The Moment of Divine Appearance

At a distance of 8 kms from the upper Ahobilam, a magnificent cleft of the mountain is seen, dividing the peak into two visible parts. From this very cleft, the Lord appeared in His most fierce form as Narasimha to protect Bhakta Prahlada. This sacred cleft is eternally known as "Ugra Stambham".

When the Lord emerged, the entire celestial pillar was shattered to pieces. It is believed that His first step produced 172 divine sounds, which became the fundamental tenets of the 172 classical ragas in Indian music.
